Training
Training for an ultra endurance event of 162km involves a
very disciplined approach, yet must be varied and interesting
as the preparation period is around 18 months and it can be
difficult to stay motivated to train, especially when the
weather turns cold and wet.
Brett’s training consists of a variety of running distances
and cross training. Distances vary from short speed sessions
around 3 to 5km, with regular 10km and 20km runs; he has also
started to build 35km and 50km sessions into his schedule.
A crucial part of his training schedule is the cross training
which consists of cycling, swimming, weight training and core
body strength work. The cross training not only provides a
break and recovery period to some muscle groups it also provides
a mental break from the repetitious running sessions.
An important part of preparation for any long distance event
is a healthy diet. Fuelling your body with the right mix of
foods can be as important as any miles put in on the training
track. Brett admits this is a weakness in his preparation
and plans to work hard on this area in the remaining 12 months
to the running of this event.
A challenging part of an event such as this is to balance
training commitments with family and work commitments. Brett
says he still hasn’t quite got the balance right but
with early morning and late night runs especially during the
warmer months the balance is improving.
See Brett’s event schedule
for details of events entered to help keep him motivated and
focused on short term targets, although he says the CanTeen
members and their determination and courage help keep him
focused.
